MayDoodle Bear Chair Poetry

Daily Note

Every day, a photograph, a poem. Once again the Daily Create has touched a memory and a bit of joy in my slice of life on this earth. The Daily Create today was to sketch the view in front of you. A part I did not sketch was this chair with bears, a particularly important part of my life, which I shared in the Daily Create post with the additional sketch above.

It seemed, though, that the sketch and the memory needed a poem and its story, and so today’s post.

The chair is my “retirement” chair, refurbished by my colleague’s wife for my retirement. It’s one of the rescued rolling chairs I saved for myself and my students so we wouldn’t have to sit on those hard school chairs. They had been in the library and were replaced, headed out the door, which seemed a waste. Luckily, I was at school that summer or early fall day and was able to roll them right into my classroom. 🙂 Perhaps that’s why kids liked my classroom… hmmm.

So when I retired, Dave, our custodian and my friend, asked his wife Brenda to reupholster one and embroider the words that adorned my outer classroom door, “Go boldly and scatter seeds of kindness.” I love it! Such a kind gift from a kind couple. The green fabric includes florals and eagles— the eagles being our mascot. And the embroidered flowers are one of my favorites, pansies. Fantastic, isn’t it?

The little brown bear is our wild cat’s bear— well used for practice. The chair is from my classroom, carefully remade by my friends, Dave and Brenda. Thank you.

It’s always in the living room— so many memories of school days and the chats with Dave. It always holds a few bears — a welcome to any children that used to enter our house before COVID. The chair and the bear are waiting.

Bear Chair

A chair is a chair
Unless there’s a bear
Sitting there where
It waits for care
When children share
The soft of its hair
In hugs everywhere
Carried down the stair
Where cousins play there,
So the chair is a chair
Named, “the Bear Chair”
Waiting for care
In the grandkid lair.
