Beneath the tea cups
in the hutch
lies the doily
so delicate–
handmade
of ancient art;
Cut out designs in
symmetrical shapes
of Pearl cotton
satin stitches – five
over threads – four;
count four
up and through
repeat until 5;
22 count fabric
held gently flat;
down; count; up;
down; count; up;
simple satin
buttonhole edge
eyelet centers
all stitched in rhythm
like the beat of the heart
of the one who so deftly
holds the threaded needle
and says,
“You can do it.”
