Day 556 Rage
Daily Note
Every day, a photograph, a poem. Today we visited the reservation where I used to teach– there are still wildfires raging further east and north, but we saw the destruction from the wildfire in our area of Nespelem and surrounding area in June and July of this year. In the photo above you see the blackened hills where where the fire burned through Ponderosa Pine and grasses right to the backyards of the town– and all around homes defended by warrior firefighters, saving almost all home for the people. Grateful, we all are for their bravery.
You may want to listen to this interview from last year with one such warrior, Spepul [Ike] Cawston, of the Colville Confederated Tribes’ Mt. Tolman Fire Control. You’ll appreciate the difficult and exhausting efforts of these fighters of fire.
All through our drive, I took pictures of the area. In the gallery below you will see the destruction, clever solutions [fencing], and the beauty of the Nespelem area.
Rage
Wildfires: unleashed rage,
roaring destruction contained
by warrior heroes.
