Success is messy.

We want students to learn every day, and learn so much every day. Their human minds are captivated by their own interests, their peers, and novelty. Even though we want them to dig into the details of the text, that one detail, the before entering and after graduation picture at Carlisle Indian School, that’s the one that was important. That’s where the questions arose. And that should be the beginning of the student’s journey. It will be his/her details that matter, and that’s what real learning is all about. The more we keep students from their own journeys to understanding, the more we keep them from the thinking needed to be critical and creative in their analysis.

What do you do during your “professional development?” The ones already planned out for you? Do you “get out of the class what you put into it?” Or is your mind on something else?

Students sidetrack, the look around and back and beyond according to their interests. Getting there is not always forward.

Success is messy. Our planning for students should include some planning by students. They should have options towards their interest in the topic, and a way to share their leaning with others.

Learning is messy. And we should let it happen.
